# Samples

> What each sample shows, and how to reuse the samples safely.

Pixelate Pro ships with ready-to-export samples: a prop, an animated character and a fire effect, plus looks, palettes and camera rigs you can reuse. This page explains what each one shows and how to use them without changing the originals.

Choose **Pixelate > Samples** to open the Project window at the sample Pixelate Assets. Everything lives in `Assets/PixelateStudio/PixelatePro/_Samples`:

| Folder | What's inside |
| - | - |
| `Pixelate Assets` | **Chest**, **UnityChan** and **Fire**: select one and click **Export**. |
| `Style Profiles` | 9 ready-made looks. |
| `Palettes` | 15 Pixelate Palettes. |
| `Camera Rigs` | 4 sets of camera views. |
| `Source Art` | The 3D sources the samples use: `Characters/UnityChan`, `Props/Chest.prefab` and `VFX/ParticleSystem_Fire.prefab`, plus `Shaders/PixelateSampleUnlit.shader`, the unlit shader their materials use. |

## Sample Pixelate Assets

Select one, look at the Preview at the bottom of the Inspector, and click **Export**. No setup is needed. The exported files go next to the sample, in `_Samples/Pixelate Assets`.

| Sample | Source | What it shows |
| - | - | - |
| **Chest** | `Source Art/Props/Chest.prefab`, a prefab | A still prop. One three-quarter view from above (**SW**), the **Golden Hour** look with lighting, outline and dithering baked into the sprite, and the pivot at the bottom (**Bottom Center (Feet)**). The asset also overrides the profile's Dithering settings, so you can see what a per-asset override looks like. Exports one sheet. |
| **UnityChan** | `Source Art/Characters/UnityChan/Mesh/unitychan.fbx`, a model | An animated character for a side-scroller. Two clips, **Run** and **Jump** (Jump plays at 1.75x speed), both at 10 frames per second, and two views, **Right** and **Left**, from the linked **CamRig\_Sidescroller** Camera Rig. Uses its own **UnityChan** look. **File Name** is `Player`, so the files are named `Player_Run_Right.png` and so on. Exports 4 sheets and 4 Animation Clips. |
| **Fire** | `Source Art/VFX/ParticleSystem_Fire.prefab`, a particle system | A fire particle effect. One **Front** view at 12 frames per second, with a **Fixed Seed** so every export is identical. Uses the **Default** look with its own automatic 8-color palette. Exports one sheet and one Animation Clip. |

The sample materials use a small unlit shader, `Pixelate Pro/Samples/Unlit` (`Source Art/Shaders/PixelateSampleUnlit.shader`), so the samples look the same in URP and the Built-In Render Pipeline. All shading comes from Pixelate Pro's own [Lighting](/effects/lighting) effect.

## Style Profiles

Nine looks you can drop onto any Pixelate Asset. Drag one onto the Style Profile field of a Pixelate Asset, and the Preview updates right away. All of them use 32 pixels per unit, except **UnityChan** (48) and **Linework** (64, so its lines stay fine).

| Style Profile | Look | Effects |
| - | - | - |
| **Default** | The plain starting point: your source's own colors, reduced to an automatic 8-color palette. No lighting or outline. | Color Palette (Auto, 8 colors) |
| **Golden Hour** | Late-afternoon sun: warm light with cool blue shadows, a dark outline and light dithering. | Lighting, Color Palette (Sweetie 16), Dithering (Bayer 4x4, 40%), Lines (1 px outline) |
| **Dusk** | Orange light against blue-violet shade, soft dithered gradients, no outline. | Lighting, Color Palette (SLSO8), Dithering (Simple, 80%) |
| **Moonlit** | Cool, pale moonlight with a strong rim light on the edges, an outline and fine dithering. | Lighting, Color Palette (Nyx8), Dithering (Bayer 8x8, 60%), Lines (1 px outline) |
| **Ember** | Hot orange firelight from a low angle with purple shade, hard light bands and an outline. | Lighting, Color Palette (Resurrect 64), Lines (1 px outline) |
| **Sorbet** | A bright 4-color pastel look with dot dithering and an outline. | Lighting, Color Adjustments (Exposure 0.3), Color Palette (Ice Cream GB), Dithering (Dot, 70%), Lines (1 px outline) |
| **Terminal** | A two-tone monochrome monitor look with a fine checker dither. | Lighting, Color Adjustments (Saturation -100), Color Palette (1bit Monitor Glow), Dithering (Bayer 2x2, 50%) |
| **Linework** | A hand-inked look for props and scenes: a white outline, a dark inline, light and dark lines on hard edges and between overlapping parts, and horizontal-line dithering. No lighting. | Color Palette (Nyx8), Dithering (Horizontal Line, 80%), Lines (Outline, Inline, Normal Line and Depth Line) |
| **UnityChan** | The UnityChan sample's own look: a lit character on the Endesga 32 palette with light dithering and Pixel Cleanup. | Lighting, Color Palette (Endesga 32), Pixel Cleanup, Dithering (30%) |

The 1 px outlines of Golden Hour, Moonlit, Ember and Sorbet use the darkest color of the profile's palette (**Darkest Palette Color**). Linework draws its lines in fixed colors, snapped to Nyx8; see [Lines](/effects/lines#tips). Golden Hour, Dusk, Moonlit, Ember, Sorbet and Terminal have **Export Lit Sprites** and **Palette Affects Lighting** on and **Export Normal Map** off: the exported sprites carry their shading in palette colors, and no normal maps are written. See [Lighting](/effects/lighting) to change that.

<Note>
  New Pixelate Assets link the sample **Default** profile when you haven't set a **Default Style Profile** in [Settings](/guides/settings) and haven't linked a profile of your own in a Pixelate Asset's Inspector yet. The other sample profiles are never picked for you. See [The default profile for new assets](/guides/style-profiles#the-default-profile-for-new-assets).
</Note>

## Palettes

Fifteen Pixelate Palettes for the [Color Palette](/effects/color-palette) and [Palette Swap](/effects/palette-swap) effects. To use one, set a Color Palette effect's **Mode** to **Custom** and pick the palette in **Custom Palette**.

| Palette | Colors | Used by |
| - | - | - |
| 1bit Monitor Glow | 2 | Terminal |
| Ice Cream GB | 4 | Sorbet |
| Kirokaze Gameboy | 4 | |
| Mono Gameboy | 4 | |
| Nyx8 | 8 | Moonlit, Linework |
| SLSO8 | 8 | Dusk |
| Warm Earth 8 | 8 | |
| Lost Century | 16 | |
| PICO-8 | 16 | |
| Retro 16 | 16 | |
| Sweetie 16 | 16 | Golden Hour |
| Fantasy 24 | 24 | |
| Endesga 32 | 32 | UnityChan |
| Apollo | 46 | |
| Resurrect 64 | 64 | Ember |

See [Palettes](/guides/palettes) to edit them or import your own `.gpl`, `.pal` or `.hex` files.

## Camera Rigs

A Camera Rig is a reusable set of camera views. Link one in the **Camera Rig** field under **Pixelate Asset Settings > Rendering**. See [Camera Rigs](/guides/camera-rigs).

| Camera Rig | Views | Good for |
| - | - | - |
| **CamRig\_Front** | **Front**, straight on | Icons, effects and anything that faces the camera. |
| **CamRig\_Sidescroller** | **Right** and **Left**, at eye level | Side-scroller characters. |
| **CamRig\_TopDownAngled** | **Front**, **Left**, **Back** and **Right**, looking down at 45° | Four-direction top-down characters. |
| **CamRig\_TopDown8** | **S**, **SW**, **W**, **NW**, **N**, **NE**, **E** and **SE**, looking down at 30° | Eight-direction top-down characters. |

## Use the samples in your own project

The samples are part of the package. A Pixelate Pro update overwrites them, and you may want to delete the `_Samples` folder later. So copy what you want to keep before you change it.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Duplicate">
    Select the sample in the Project window and choose **Edit > Duplicate** (**Ctrl+D**, or **Cmd+D** on macOS).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Move the copy">
    Drag the copy into your own folder and rename it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Use the copy">
    Edit and assign the copy instead of the original. A copied Pixelate Asset exports next to its new location.
  </Step>
</Steps>

This works for every sample type: Pixelate Assets, Style Profiles, Palettes and Camera Rigs. To make a copied Style Profile or Camera Rig the starting point for every new Pixelate Asset, pick it as **Default Style Profile** or **Default Camera Rig** in [Settings](/guides/settings).

<Tip>
  If you copy the sample models or materials too, keep in mind that the sample materials use the `Pixelate Pro/Samples/Unlit` shader from `_Samples/Source Art/Shaders`.
</Tip>

### Removing or restoring the samples

You can delete the `_Samples` folder at any time. Assets you created yourself don't depend on it, unless they link a sample profile, palette or Camera Rig. Copy those first, as described above, and link the copies. Check especially for the sample **Default** profile, which new Pixelate Assets link when you have no profile of your own (see the note under [Style Profiles](#style-profiles)). The Pixelate Browser's **Profile** filter shows which assets use it.

To get the samples back, import the Pixelate Pro package again and select only the `_Samples` folder in the **Import Unity Package** window.

## Credits

Twelve of the sample palettes were made by the artists below and published on [Lospec](https://lospec.com). Their colors and order are unchanged. Thank you to their authors. The same list is in `Third-Party Notices.md` in the package folder. Mono Gameboy, Retro 16 and Warm Earth 8 were made for Pixelate Pro.
