# Troubleshooting

> What Pixelate Pro's validation messages mean and how to fix them.

Pixelate Pro checks your setup before it previews or exports. Problems show as messages in the Inspector: under the **Export** button, under a section, or inside the effect they belong to. **Errors** block Export; **warnings** let you export but point at something that is probably not what you want. Each message says how to fix it; this page adds a little context.

The [Browser window](/guides/browser)'s **Validate** runs the same checks on many assets at once.

## Source and animation

| Message | Fix |
| - | - |
| Source is not assigned. | Drag a model, prefab or particle prefab into **Source**. |
| AnimationClip assets cannot be used as a Source. | Assign the model or prefab as Source, then add the clip under **Animation > Source Clips**. |
| Source type could not be determined. | The Source isn't a model, prefab or particle prefab. Assign one of those. |
| All assigned animation clips are disabled. | Tick at least one clip in **Source Clips**, or remove the entries to export a single still frame. |

## Style Profile

| Message | Fix |
| - | - |
| No style profile assigned. | Link a Style Profile, or click **New Style Profile**. |
| Style Profile "…" has an effect whose script is missing. | An effect's script was deleted or doesn't compile. Restore the script, fix the Console's compile errors, or click **Remove Missing Effect** on the profile. |
| Profile Settings effect is missing. | Select the Style Profile once; Pixelate Pro recreates its Profile Settings. |
| The active render pipeline is not supported. | Pixelate Pro supports Built-In and URP. See [Compatibility](/compatibility). |

## Camera views

| Message | Fix |
| - | - |
| Camera views 2 and 5 are both named "S". | Rename one view so each gets its own sheets, clips and Sprite Library categories. Until then, Export names the later one `S_2`. |

## Output and Export

| Message | Fix |
| - | - |
| Output file name is empty. | Enter a **File Name** in Output. |
| Output folder must be inside the project's Assets folder. | Choose a folder inside `Assets`, such as `Assets/Sprites`, or clear the field to export next to the asset. |
| Output folder cannot contain parent-directory segments. | Remove `..` from the path. Exports always stay inside `Assets`. |
| Exports to: save this asset inside Assets first. | The Pixelate Asset hasn't been saved in `Assets` yet, so "same folder as this asset" has no folder. Save it inside `Assets`, or choose an Output Folder. |
| Export was cancelled because the selected Pixelate Asset is no longer available. | The asset was deleted or unloaded during export. Select it again and click Export. |
| Export could not find an available target path. | With **Overwrite Existing** off, Export ran out of numbered names. Rename the File Name, view or clip, or turn Overwrite Existing on. |

If Export reports a Unity import problem (for example "Unity did not create a TextureImporter"), refresh the project with **Assets > Refresh** and export again.

## Effects

| Message | Fix |
| - | - |
| Color Palette is set to Custom but no palette is assigned. | Assign a palette to **Custom Palette**, or set **Mode** to Auto. |
| Custom Palette source has no colors. | Assign a palette with at least one color. For an image, make sure it has visible (opaque) pixels. |
| No palette generated yet. / Auto palette is stale. | Click **Generate** / **Regenerate** on the Color Palette. It builds the palette from the current Preview view and clip. |
| Dithering requires an enabled Color Palette effect. | Add and enable Color Palette in the same Style Profile. |
| Dithering is set to Custom but no pattern is assigned. | Assign a Sprite or Texture2D to **Custom Pattern**, or pick a built-in pattern. |
| The Custom Dithering pattern could not be read. | Use a PNG or JPG inside `Assets`, or enable **Read/Write** in the texture's import settings. |
| Lines draws nothing because every line type is off. | Turn on **Outline**, **Inline**, **Colors Line**, **Normal Line**, or **Depth Line**, or disable Lines. |
| Lines Darkest Palette Color needs an enabled Color Palette. | Add a Color Palette, or set the **Fill** to Color or Shaded. |
| Normal Line and Depth Line need a 3D model or prefab source. | Turn them off for particle assets; use Outline, Inline, or Colors Line. |
| Lines: the Outline is cut off where the sprite comes within N px of the cell edge. | Increase **Cell Size** (or lower Source Scale or move Camera Offset). |
| Palette Swap requires an enabled Color Palette effect. | Add and enable Color Palette in the same Style Profile. |
| Lighting has no active light sources. | Enable the Global or Directional light with an intensity above 0 and a non-black color, or disable Lighting. |
| Pixel Cleanup Strength is Off, so it changes nothing. | Set **Strength** to Light or Strong, or disable Pixel Cleanup. |

## Common questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Only part of my model is in the sprite">
    **Cell Size** is too small or the camera is off-center. Increase Cell Size, and use **Camera Offset** (usually Y) to center the model. Assets made with **Create > Pixelate > Pixelate Asset** from a model are framed for you.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My character is facing away from the camera">
    Views look at the source's front at **Rotation Y 180**. If your model faces a different axis, rotate the views, or use **Add Directions** and pick the view you need.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Lit preview requires an enabled Lighting effect">
    Lit and Normal need an enabled **Lighting** effect on the Style Profile. Add it with **Add Effect**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The Browser says Export Outdated right after I changed a material">
    That is expected. Pixelate Pro notices changes to the source's materials and textures, not only the Pixelate Asset. Export again to bring the sprites up to date.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Sprites look blurry in my scene">
    Turn on **Pixelated** in the Style Profile's Profile Settings and export again, so the sprites use Point filtering. Also check that your camera and Canvas don't scale sprites by non-whole amounts.
